What’s the difference between your Epping Dentist and an orthodontist? In other words – what does an orthodontist do?

An orthodontist is a trained specialist dentist who diagnoses teeth misalignment and then uses a range of treatments to correct it. Properly aligned teeth are better for chewing, talking, and cleaning! People feel more comfortable about smiling then.

Nowadays, orthodontic treatment can start after a child is about seven if a developmental problem would otherwise occur. Children have a mixture of baby and adult teeth then, so it can be an ideal time to steer the growth process towards a healthier layout. Unhealthy habits like thumbsucking or tongue thrusting can be seriously addressed so they don’t continue to distort the bite. Protruding front teeth that risk being damaged can be protected, too.

The primary time for orthodontic treatment is in the early teens when children wear braces to slowly move their permanent teeth into their proper positions and alignment. That way, the child’s teeth will function most efficiently during the lengthier proportion of their life – adulthood.

If you are already an adult and could not have orthodontic treatment to correct a bite or alignment issue as a teenager, all is not lost! You can have it done now! Talk to us at your Epping Dentist, and we can help you explore your options.

All people wearing braces must be conscientious to prevent food particles from building up underneath the brackets and wires. We will show you how to brush your teeth with braces! A mouthguard is a must for anyone wearing braces who plays sports!

To protect the runner bands and wires used in braces, please avoid sticky, hard and chewy foods like popcorn, nuts, hard taco shells, sticky or hard lollies, gum, ice, corn chips, and hard biscuits or crackers. You can help yourself by cutting into small pieces hard foods, like raw veggies or hard fruit, hard bread, and meat.

Suitable foods include yoghurt, soft fruits without seeds (banana, grape, orange, berries), cheese, pasta, and noodles.

While you’re wearing braces, stay in touch with us at your Epping Dentist for peace of mind and effective orthodontic treatment.
