If you are about to get a denture fitted, your Epping Dentist team at Rawson Dental really want you to know how to care for your oral hygiene in this new situation. You might also want to know about this, if an elderly family member is getting a denture.

Some of your care routine will be the same – and some of it will be different.

If you have either a partial or a full denture you will need to remove it and clean it once a day. This is easily done as part of your night-time routine.

To give your mouth a rest from the denture, you won’t be sleeping with it in your mouth – it will be stored overnight in a glass of clean water (or a denture cleaning solution, if you wish) to stop it drying out and changing shape. You can easily clean it beforehand.

First, you’ll have to remove the denture from your mouth. Stand over a folded towel or a half-full basin of water as you do this, so if it does happen to fall, it won’t break.

Hold the denture very carefully so any wires etc don’t get broken.

Next, rinse the denture in clean cool water – not hot. Then carefully brush it with a soft toothbrush and denture cleaner – not toothpaste! Rinse the denture again and pop it into its night-time container of water.

After that, it’s a good idea to brush your gums and tongue and cheeks – and any remaining natural teeth you have. Remember to continue brushing your natural teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and continue flossing them once a day.

Finally, visit your Epping Dentist team at Rawson Dental for regular checkups to make sure your denture continues to fit well and your natural teeth and mouth are healthy!
